Speculating with designers and design students

In the traditional design context, design is understood as problem-solving. Speculative design challenged this perception by proposing that design could focus on problem-finding, and design fiction as a design and research practice was introduced. This framework puts forward design fiction as a purposeful resource in the design process while supporting access to new critical perspectives.

I have been developing a framework titled “Tangible Engagements with Possible Future(s) through Design Fiction” for designers and design students aiming at designerly ways of discovering opportunities and inspiring action. This framework has been created at the Design Faculty of the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA), since the academic year of 2019/2020 with the participation of BA and MA design students. I have been invited to take part in local design communities to talk about this framework. First in 2020, with a hands-on micro-conference, organized as a satellite event of UX TARTU 2020, a week-long event bringing together the UX community. Most recently in 2023, in World Usability Day Estonia 2023, an annual UX, web and interaction design conference; the largest in the Baltics.
